10 Simple Car Projects You Can Do During Lockdown

Seeing that we are once again in lockdown, perhaps we can take this time to give our vehicles some TLC. Here are a couple of project ideas that we thought of. We purposely selected projects that require few tools and is hopefully easy enough for anyone to take on. Do the ones you are comfortable with. We will provide some basic instructions. However, given that every car model may be a little different, we do recommend doing a search on Youtube and watch how some of these tasks are done for your specific needs.
1. Cleaning and Conditioning Leather Seats
Difficulty : Easy
Estimated Time : 30 Mins - 1 Hour (Depending on the current condition of the leather seats)
Tools Needed : Leather care products (ideally with UV protection) and some quality towels.
Instructions :
1. Clean the leather surface with a damp cotton towel. Depending on how bad the current condition is, you may want to use specific cleaners and brushes to deep clean the leather. be careful though as leathers can be sensitive to some chemicals that dry it out too much. Always test on a small surface before using it on larger surfaces.
2. Apply conditioning cream and buff out. It's that easy.
This is a relatively easy one that pretty much anyone should be able to do. All you need are some leather care products and some elbow grease. Taking care of leather seats will help keep the value of the car when the time comes to sell it.

2. Fix sagging vapor barrier
Difficulty : Moderate (Depending on the car model, some cars may be harder to access)
Estimated Time : 1 - 2 Hours
Tools Needed : Screwdriver to remove door screws, cutter and plastic scrapper to remove old hardened butyl and fresh roll of butyl sealant (gam nyamuk).
Instructions :
This job probably applies to older vehicles, say maybe 5 years and above where the sticky material has hardened. It may seem a little scary to tackle but just do a quick search on how to remove your car door card to see if you are comfortable with it.

3. Replace light bulbs
Difficulty : Easy/Moderate/Hard (Depending on the car model, some cars may be harder to access)
Estimated Time : 10 Mins - Hours (Depending on which bulbs you want to replace in the car)

This is most important if you have blown bulbs or bulbs that are starting to dim. Another reason could also be that you want brighter low beam for driving, so changing to a brighter LED may be an option.

4. Fix sticky windows
Difficulty : Easy
Estimated Time : 10 Mins
Tools Needed : Silicone Spray
Instructions :
This is a relatively simple one if you have sticky windows, meaning the windows don't go up or down smoothly. Sometimes this can be a mechanical fault, however, this is a simple and cheap solution to try before having to deal with major fixes. Who knows it may save you a couple of bucks.

5. Dash Cam Install
Difficulty : Moderate
Estimated Time : 1-2 Hours
Tools Needed : Small plastic tucking tool (we find plastic spoons can do the trick too, but thicker and tougher ones recommended), windscreen cleaner and microfiber towel. Cable ties can also come in handy to keep the wires neat and out of the way.
Instructions :
The hardest part of this job would probably be your ability to remove some of the parts like glove box to be able to route the wires all the way to the rear view mirror area. It is generally a pretty easy task, only that it can be time consuming as it can be a pretty long route from power source to camera mount location. However, it is not a very high skilled task and most should be able to get this done with some patience.
